I read a post about street photography at The Online Photographer and it made me think of ‘what to do’ with a street photograph?
By which I mean is that if one takes an art photograph or a landscape or a photograph of something attractive, one can hang it on the wall.
Well of course one can hang anything one wants on the wall, but really, who wants a photograph of a gang of street kids or a family eating ice-cream on a beach, on the wall?
Well perhaps in the den, study, or bathroom, but on the wall in the living room?
OK, so not on the wall. How about making a book that you can browse through? Well maybe one person in a million can do this, but not the majority. How about the web? Yes, that’s good. But a print you can put on the wall? No. Not street photography.
There are some people who see things – little coincidences – all the time, and make great photos based on what they see. That’s not exactly street photography though, at least not how I see it. When I look at this photograph I see that both people have pursed lips, or something approximating pursed lips, but I didn’t see it at the time. I believe I was looking at the peek-a-boo nature of the scene caused by the tree cutting through it, and the fact that neither person seemed aware of the other. And that the light was nice. And the color of her dress was pleasant.
