Photoshop Techniques – The Selection Tool

Red

Red

This image was made entirely in Photoshop. I used the Marquee tool to isolate a rectangle. Then I filled it with this red color.

Next, I copied the image twice more by duplicating the layer. Now I have three layers.

I went to the top layer and with the Magic Wand tool set to ’1′, I clicked on the white area around the rectangle and using the Eraser tool I deleted all the white background.

I now inverted the selection using Select > Inverse, and then went to Edit > Transform > Rotate and rotated the image a few degrees.

Then with the Move tool highlighted, I pulled the red rectangle down the frame a little.

I did the same with the next layer highlighted I did the same thing.

Now I had three layers with three rectangles showing.

Type
The type layers are very easy to deal with. I just typed three separate sections of type. Then I moved them with the Move tool more or less over their respective rectangles.

Finally, I used the Edit > Transform > Rotate to rotate the type and align each by eye with the rectangle with which it is associated.

Could you explain how to rotate the wording? I did Select All and it is not what I expected.

Thank you for your excellent question. I should have been clearer about describing how to deal with type.

It is not like other layers and you do not need to use Select > All. If you use Select > All it will detect an empty layer and you will not be able to rotate the text, as you have found.

Instead, just go straight to Edit > Transform > Rotate and you will be able to do it.

I’d love to have Photoshop but can’t afford it, unfortunately. My old graphics program won’t even load on my new Win7 (64 bit) computer. I’ve been trying a free download of Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3 (which is the upgraded version of my old PhotoImpact.) Although I like the functionality, it just crashes CONSTANTLY. Lots of problems running programs on Win7 so far, unfortunately. I’m hesitant to buy something pricey until I can be sure it’ll both load AND work. Dang Winblows… :(
