Getty Images Will Not Buy Rex Features

by David Bennett on August 3, 2010

Rex Features bills itself as one of the world’s leading independent photographic press agencies and picture libraries that concentrates on personalities, news and features, travel, business, animal, humour, lifestyle, fashion, music, historical or stock images. It is primarily a UK based companies but there is also a Rex USA operating out of New York and Los Angeles under the same brand.

If you don’t know Rex, think celebrities, glamour, big smiles, and cute animal stories.

Getty Images were set to buy out Rex, but an intervention by the Office Of Fair Trading worried about the monopoly situation that they feared would arise in the UK, has worried Getty to the point that they have abandoned their plans to buy Rex.

The OFT had referred the proposed takeover to the Competition Commission and as a result, Getty turned away from the deal.
