Harold Chapman went to Paris in the 1950s and photographed William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg and others at the Beat Hotel.
In an interview in the Guardian newspaper he is quoted as saying “From the Beat generation, I learned that I could do anything; they had broken all the rules. I didn’t need to worry about composition or anything like that. I based the rest of my life on that understanding.”
His work is on view at the Proud Gallery in London until 24 August and available for purchase there and online.
I think there is an error in the Guardian article which refers to Harold Chapman’s ‘Compax’ camera. I suspect it was a Contax.

Yes, it certainly was a Contax-a typo overlooked there, naughty Guardian!!
Yes, I think it is a case of a journalist moving out of her comfort zone and forgetting to take her fact-checking equipment with her.
Rather than trust her ears, she could have asked him to spell the name of the camera.
Love the one you’ve chosen for this article!

I read Burrough’s books when I was a teenager – liked them a lot.
