Photography: Sticking Out With Cutouts

by David Bennett on February 7, 2012

I watched this video from John McWade of Before and After about making a cutout to give a little oomph to a photo.

I decided to give it a go with an image I was working on. Do you see how the image seems to come out forwards from its background?

I made it by duplicating the image and then making the background to the upper layer the dark chocolate color you can see, and the base layer white. Then I cut out part of the surround of the upper layer to show the base layer.

That way I could change the amount I cut out until I got the amount that seemed to work best.

This is such an effective technique. Even just the slightest part poking out like the dog’s ear makes a huge difference! I’m going to mess around with a few photos now and see what I can come up with. Good video, thanks for sharing!

Yes, even when I look at something and know that the technique is being used – it still has that effect.
