About Me
My name is David Bennett and I take photographs for a number of websites.
I also take portrait and landscape photographs for myself and for clients.
About This Site
This is my personal site where I write about Nikon cameras and lenses, Photoshop, Lightroom, Aperture, and typography.
I stated this site in 2007 and if you dig back through the archives or use the search button, you will find articles about the Nikon D200, the D60, the D700, and the P5100.
You will also find articles about various lenses and lens tests that I have carried out.
I am based in England at the moment, and my background is that I have been photographing for about 20 years. I shot film originally and developed and printed my own black and white photographs.
My negatives and contact sheets are in storage abroad and it’s likely to be some time before I can get to them and work through them so they can see the light of day again. This portrait was shot on film.
In the days when I shot film I mostly used a Nikon FE, although I also used a medium format Rolleicord.
Now I shoot digitally almost exclusively and I am currently using a Nikon D7000 and a Panasonic GF1 although I have a Nikon FMn2 sitting on my bookshelf that is loaded with Fuji Reala, which was my favorite color film.
I like shooting a variety of subjects and I do not believe that photographs mirror reality exactly. I photograph to produce images that I like.
I don’t think that photographs ever tell the ‘whole truth’ because the act of framing a subject or choosing the angle and which to shoot the subject involves an editorial decision.
On the other hand I would not frame or doctor a news report to produce a false impression of what was going on. For that kind of photography I try to tell the truth as I see it, such as in this photograph.
My Digital Camera History
I started with a D70, and then moved to a D200. Meanwhile I used a D40 and then a D60 as a lightweight carry around camera.
Then I got a D700 and for the first time I could see the colors and the detail shine through just like I wanted them to do.
But the D700 is a big beast to carry around, and full frame means that getting a long reach with lenses is a problem unless one uses very big and heavy lenses.
So I now shoot with a D7000 and I love what comes out of that camera.
