Checking and Looking

Just to the right of this scene is a window in which there is a large circular gold coloured clock. At the top of the clock is a very very big fly. Each movement of its mechanical legs moves the clock on a tick. I don’t like it and neither does my wife Tamara. Why a big fly? It is not pretty and it is not exactly relevant to the mechanism of a clock. So why?

Visitors to Cambridge often stop and look at the clock. You see gaggles of them looking at it. Tour guides stop at it with their groups. What do they see in it that brings on the smiles and admiring looks?

And then there is the checking of the phones and other rituals.
