National Gallery Tableau

Somehow all the disparate elements have come together to make a tableau – a dramatic arrangement of people such as a group of costumed actors posing silently on stage, or a piece of visual art, or a chance coming together of people who have no idea of the part they play in the tableau or that there is a tableau at all. As someone pointed out, the man standing at the back could almost be in the painting behind him, and he is the lynchpin around which everything makes sense.

Straight Blond Hair

There’s a predominant type in the assemblage – English born, with fairly small features, and tallish with a figure that leans towards androgynous. And a definite sense of hanging out together and yet separate and poised.

How does it happen? What confluence of forces makes an outcome? It is not the same as London women sixty or seventy years ago, if photos from then are anything to go by. Then, after a certain age, working class women seemed to lose all pretensions to allure and became something sexless. Look at photos by Grace Robertson to see what I am talking about.
